I was lucky that girls were starting to be accepted into playing football with the boys whilst I was at primary school. It was suggested I went along to a local girls football club which I absolutely loved and I moved through the age groups.
From the age of 13 I started playing at a high level until I started experiencing really bad knee pain which ultimately stopped me playing football. Fast forward 6 years and I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis (an autoimmune chronic condition). With treatment the pain lessened and my main aim was to return to playing football. Unfortunately, I was told ‘normal’ football was no longer an option, which was devastating.
A few years ago, I heard about walking football and I researched local teams in the area. I found this team in Perth and I am so glad I did. Walking football has allowed me to play football again in a way that is not going to make my health worse. Another massive plus is the great team of ladies I play with. They are so welcoming and encouraging and we also have a good laugh!
Walking football isn’t just for people over the age of 50 and I would recommend anyone and everyone to give it a go.
